Local Train Station: Kode From Tokyo: Take the JR Jyoetsu Shinkansen to Urasa Station. At Urasa, transfer to a public bus toward Tochio Onsen. Get out at the last stop.
Travel Time: Tokyo to Urasa, 1 hr 30 minutes. Bus from Urasa Station to Tochio Onsen Station, 40 minutes. Total travel time is approx. 2 hrs 30 minutes.
Price: Rates start at Y4,500 (no meals). With breakfast and dinner, prices are higher. This is a Japanese-style ryokan with 35 rooms (9 rooms in the old building, 26 in a newer building).
Onsen Specifics: Eight outdoor baths (four for men, four for women). The ryokan also has a several outdoor rental baths. Water Good For: Neuralgia, rheumatism, skin problems, stomach problems, rheumatism, diabetes, and womens' problems. The water is reputed to be beneficial for couples intent on getting pregnant. What's unique about this ryokan is the water -- which is reknowned for its ability to help couples conceive. The water's radium content is among the highest of any Japanese onsen. It is said that radium helps to refresh and invigorate the cells in the body.
The ryokan is also known for its food (again, attributed to the excellent water). Jiyukan's water is often reported by the Japanese press as being the most healthful drinking water in Japan.
Although the all the baths have been upgraded and remodeled, the ryokan itself is still old-fashioned and has kept its simple style. The outdoor rental baths have a great view of the canyon below.
One important note: In spite of the ryokan's reputation for cooking, if you forego meals, you can stay at the resonable rate of Y4,500 per person. A communal kitchen is available for guest who choose this option.
