Northern Hokkaido

Northern Hokkaido is the land of nature. The most beautiful national parks -- Akan National Park, Shiretoko National Park, Kushiro Shitsugen National Park, and Rishiri Rebun-Sarobetsu National Park -- are located in this region.

The particularly beautiful Akan National Park is a mountainous park with three famous volcanic lakes - Lake Akan-ko, Lake Kussharo-ko, and Lake Mashu-ko.

Shiretoko-hanto Peninsula in northeastern Hokkaido is home to many steep mountain peaks covered with virgin forest, some adjacent to Sea of Okhotsk. Expect to find many waterfalls if you are able to get off the beaten path.

Wakkanai, in the most northern part of Hokkaido, is known as "wind town" because of the strong winds that blow on most days.

In Kushiro, there is a huge 183 sq. kilometer marsh packed with a mix of flora and fauna, including Hokkaido deer and the white-tailed sea eagle.

If you are looking for drama found in the natural world, head for northern Hokkaido.
