Southern Tohoku

This region presents the perfect mix and balance of nature and culture. The presence of active volcanic activity in the region means visitors have ample opportunity to dabble in hot springs culture. The Onsen districts of Zao and Matsushima are full of natural onsen located along side sophisticated and atmospheric towns. Sendai is known for its old-style of streets and architecture. Matsushima is a city built on 260 islands and received its notoriety from the Hi-ku poems written by Hi-ku master, Basho Matsuo.

There are many well-known and appealing onsen towns such as Akiu-onsen district, Naruko onsen district, Ginzan-onsen district, and Tsuchiyu-onsen district.

Naruko onsen district is located in Miyagi and consists of several hot springs towns. It has 1,000 years of history providing facilities for bathers to cure their problems. Naruko onsen district is especially well known for water which contains minerals and sulfur, which has a positive effect on circulation and high blood pressure, and leaves the skin feeling smooth (with an alkaline base that helps cure various problems of the skin.

Tsuchiyu-onsen district is located along the Arakawa River that originates at Mt. Azuma-san in Fukushima. There are more than ten different hot springs here. Tsuchiyu is known as one of the best hot spring sites in the Tohoku region
